PATIENT RECORDS – DATA EXTRACTION - CARE.DATA
A new system of data extraction from records in the NHS by the Health & Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) is to roll this out across the country beginning in 2014. This is the care.data scheme.
This involves patient data being extracted from computer medical records and linked with other data from hospitals and community care. The information is used by others such as those planning NHS services, and approved researchers. Sometimes confidential information will be released to approved researchers outside the NHS if this is allowed by law, and rules are in place to protect your privacy. More information is available at www.nhs.uk/caredata or at the dedicated helpline 0300 456 3531. More details about how the NHS looks after confidential information and how it may be used can be found at www.hscic.gov.uk/patientconf
If you wish to opt-out of this process, please inform the practice in writing and a code will be put on your records.
